Claude Code Skills Demystified: Lazy Loading and the Real Trigger Rate

Skills don't dump all their prompts into context by default. They load layer by layer on demand. But passive trigger rate is only 30-50%, so slash commands are your safest bet.


I keep seeing people worry: if I install a bunch of skills, won’t all those prompts get injected into context by default and dilute the model’s attention?

No.

The Lazy Loading Mechanism

Skills were literally designed to solve the problem of “context window getting clogged by prompts that are only relevant in specific scenarios.”

Every skill has a YAML frontmatter section with a short description explaining what the skill does and when it should trigger. Only this description gets injected into context. When the model reads the description and decides the skill is relevant, it then loads the skill’s main file (SKILL.md). From there, it follows the index to load sub-scenario markdown files from /reference, or bundled scripts, as needed.

So it’s layer-by-layer on-demand loading. There’s no “all skill prompts dumped into context at once” problem.

Type /context in Claude Code, and you’ll see each skill’s description takes up roughly 100 tokens.

But Passive Trigger Rate Is Only 30-50%

The mechanism is well-designed, but there’s a practical problem: passive trigger rate from descriptions alone is only 30-50%.

That means you could be doing exactly the kind of task a skill was built to help with, and there’s a coin-flip chance the model won’t trigger it on its own. This gets worse the more memory and rules you’ve injected—the model’s attention gets spread thinner, and trigger rates drop further.

So using / to manually invoke a slash command is the safest approach. Don’t expect the model to magically know which skill to use every time.

How to Improve Trigger Rates

Based on experience, a few things help:

  1. Write precise descriptions. Trigger keywords need to be specific. Don’t write “handles various tasks”—write “triggers when user mentions PPTX, slides, or presentation.”
  2. Don’t install too many skills. Every skill’s description takes up context. Install 50 skills and that’s 5,000 tokens of constant overhead. Attention gets diluted.
  3. Build the slash command habit. When you know which skill you need, just call /skill-name directly. Treat passive triggering as a bonus, not your primary strategy.
